Café Rio is trending down a familiar path where lack of change brings apathy. When they were the only game in town, they could command higher prices for their food. Now that there are burrito shops on virtually every corner, it is time for reinvention. A limited selection of meat and toppings, and a price tag that gets you for $13 for a burrito and a drink. Not exactly a "cheap" lunch. Rio, how I loved thee. Time to put the "fresh" back in "fresh Mex" and get something new going on.

We frequent this paticular cafe rio. Tonight the employees seemed off. They were shot and impatient even though there was no line and they are opened for another hour. We felt as though we were wasting their time. The pork was low and rather than use the new fresh one they gave me tiny bits and scraps of the old one. The food was good and tasty we will be back but might be awhile.

I'm usually a fan of CR, most of their food is delicious! There's something about this location in SJ that just isn't good. For one thing every time I've gone during lunch I end up waiting for forever to get my food and pay for it, usually around 35 min. That wouldn't bother me too much if the food tasted good, but this location seems like it puts too much salt in its sauce. It stands out every time I've gone! They've also messed up on at least 3 of my orders. They try to move so fast and just assume someone wants lettuce or pico de gallo that they basically throw it on before you can answer. Then they end up taking as much of it off as they can but by that time the liquid has gotten over everything and your food tastes like it. They definitely need to make some changes!

Terrible cafe Rio. They mess up the orders every single time when we order online. The service is rude and annoyed with anything you say. My wife ordered nachos with everything and queso and it came with chips and shredded cheese and meat. That would be fine except when we go up to say it was wrong they act super annoyed that we would even say anything.

My previous review here has been for times I have been here for lunch. This update is in regards to a dinner visit and yes it was so bad it does deserve 1 star. It wasn't too busy but it took forever. It literally took 30 minutes to get through the line. It was rediculous! The lady making tortillas began yelling to people waiting in line, taking thier orders. You had to yell back your order. This created too many problems because you weren't near them while they were making your food, causing mess ups with nearly every order. I have been here for lunch while it's twice as busy and get through the line in half the time. The food wasn't fresh like I've had at lunch and mine was messed up like others for the reasons mentioned above. The dinner crew needs to take some notes from the lunch time crew. I will probably be back for lunch but only because my coworkers like to come here.

I love Cafe Rio, but I hate this location. We always have issues with our order and their signature drinks have been empty every time I have gone here. I don't know why they can't keep them filled up. I hate paying money for a drink and then I get my cup and find out that all their signature drinks are gone. I have asked several times for them to fill them up and it either takes until I'm half way done with my meal, or twice, they never got around to it. Last time we walked in and the place was a mess, the line was back to the door and the drinks were empty again. We ended up driving to the one in Herriman where we never have issues.

I've eaten at quite a few Cafe Rios in Utah, and one in another state, and this is my favorite location. I've been going to it for years, and it's in a good location. They're usually swamped; which isn't a good thing, but because it's a normal thing for them they get through the line quick, in my opinion. The food is usually "fresh" in a sense that it hasn't been sitting in the warming trays long too. The service is usually pretty good as well. Cafe Rio as a whole, has always been more focused on getting through orders ASAP, than customer service; but they're about as nice as you can be while still being efficient. The food is amazing, as it usually is. I've only ever ordered burritos, because they're what I like. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Obviously I can't speak about the quality of the enchiladas, tamales, or salads. Cafe Rio is a great place to get 1 huge meal, if you're really hungry; or two smaller meals if you're not starving for about 9-10 bucks. It's also something that "holds" well and makes for good leftovers. The lettuce and pico don't hold super well, but produce traditionally doesn't keep very well anyway. One of the things I love most about Cafe Rio is the consistency. Not consistency in portion size, as that's largely determined by the staff that day, but it's consistently good. It's "safe". If you're unsure where you want to eat and you're in a decently large group of people; Cafe Rio is usually a safe bet as most people will enjoy SOMETHING on the menu. I've never suggested Cafe Rio in a group of friends and had it turned down. My only complaint with Cafe Rio, and it's Cafe Rio as a whole, not just this location. Is the price of the burritos are listed at about 7.79? and "enchilada style" (sauce and cheese on top) is an extra dollar. I've never gotten a burrito not enchilada style, my friends have never gotten a burrito not enchilada style, my family has never gotten burritos not enchilada style; Hell, I've never heard anyone in line in front, or behind me say "No" when they ask if you want it enchilada style...So that 7-something dollar burrito automatically (for 90% of people) becomes around 9.50 after tax. Overall, I'll continue to love Cafe Rio and I still go to it at least a few times a month. The fact they have "free meal" cards after 10 purchases definitely helps as I feel like I'm getting a little more out of my purchase. It's always nice to get free food, even though one could argue it's technically not free as they probably jack up their prices 10% to compensate. Either way, it's a fun place. Great food, casual environment, and good for groups. What's not to like?

The WORST CALL IN SERVICE EVER. I typically don't write reviews, but just be warned, if you call ahead. They'll tell you it'll be ready in a certain time, but it wont, pull end up waiting in the pick up line way past your promised time of pick up, maybe with a "free" drink, like that makes up for the inconvenience of lost time, a beverage, come on... And all the while...there's no one in line, so no excuse to not have your meal ready, and thus wasn't just a one time thing, this happens nearly every time we call in. Horrible customer service. It's almost be worth it to just go elsewhere. Get it together cafe rio. Foods great, service sucks

This was a great restaurant a few years ago. I live nearby and frequent this location and I will not order takeout here again. I ordered a pork salad no black beans no guacamole and it had both on it. I also ordered pork tacos and received a chicken quesadilla. I should have made them go through the bag before I left the restaurant. I tried to call back 5 minutes after they closed to let the manager know and they do not answer their phone. I miss the days when cafe rio was consistent.

The hype surrounding Cafe Rio is deserved, it's a good Mexican chain restaurant. I still wish there was a Qdoba here, but one can dream. Anyways, in an area that's rife with fast food, Cafe Rio is a great option for Mexican fast food. It's like the In-n-Out of Mexican fast food. The long ass waits definitely reflect that. During prime eating times, there can be quite the line. But hey, that's just a sign that people like the food, price, location, and decor. It's an affordable option, tasty food with a good variety, convenient located in the strip mall, and plenty of seating which helps out all you folks with families.

To crowded. Everything tastes the same. Way to loud. Service it seems pretty slow not impressed by this Mexican food wannabe

I am shocked to see all the negative reviews about this location. I've been coming to this location for 10 years now and it has always treated me right. Other than the normal things with this chain (minimal seating/ long lines) we love their food! If you go during non-meal times you can get in and out in no time. We came in at 5:45 on a Wednesday evening and had no issue. Food was great as usual.

I think this is my favorite Cafe Rio in the area. The service is always super nice, and they give generous portions of the meat. The sweet pork is the way to ggo, Cafe Rio's pork salad is so amazingly delicious. The pork is a little bit sweet and spicy all at once and mixed with their cilantro lime rice it is the perfect bite. They always give you a giant pile of lettuce, topped with pico, lime, cilantro, cheese, and crispy chip strips. Then you get a big container of their tomatillo ranch dressing, which is like the most delicious thing ever, I could drink it on its own. All of this is served on a cheesy tortilla. The only thing I will say is that I feel like their tortillas aren't always the freshest, and they are usually cold. They are making them fresh off to the side, but the add cheese and then make a stack off to the side that just sits there until ordered. Their burritos are also really good, and smothered is definitely the way to go. Covered in enchilada sauce and smothered in cheese, then baked to perfection. The restaurant is always loud and full of people, but that is the atmosphere they are going for, and it is always fun. It is a little on the pricey side, but it is worth it and I always find myself craving a delicious pork salad. Be sure to get a punch card when you go, so that your 10th meal is free! This location is always one of the busiest around, so if you're there at dinner time be ready for a line.

Every time we give this location another chance they screw it up! Called in two salads for pick up, requested no pico and It was added! Shredded beef had no taste "seasoning" and my wife got all the fat pieces from the meat!! Soggy due to the meat juice, Never again at this location!

Let me start by saying I love Cafe Rio. I will continue to eat there, but this location has some serious problems and I will never go back. Let me describe my last 3 experiences... 1. Called in a to go order set for pick up in an hour. I arrive, I wait 20 minutes past pick up time. Order was messed up when I arrived home. Ordered 2 salads, I got 2 tostadas. 2. Called in a to go order set for pick up in an hour. I ordered Salmon tacos. I arrive and wait 15 minutes past pick up time only to be told the salmon isn't cooked yet and won't be ready for 30 minutes... 3. Called in a to go order set for pick up in a half an hour. When I arrived, there wasn't and continued to be no line at either station to order. I was told "someone must have forgot to pick up my order slip, we'll get on it right away." I watch my slip sit at the front of the regular order line with no action. I watch 3 parties come in and go through the line and sit down before I get up and ask if I should just walk through the line. For all my troubles, I get a "sorry about that." Worst location ever.

I've always enjoyed Café Rio but I had an experience at this paticular and I will not be returning. This is the closest location to my home, although it is still a good 15-20 minute drive. I drove there tonight and ordered a salad to go. Upon getting home, I found a long, black hair in my salad. My fiancé drove back to the location to speak to the manager and request a new salad. The cashier was apologetic, however, the manager did not apologize and even asked the young cashier to check the salad to be sure there was a hair! Never will we return to this location. Terrible costumer service.

Food was descent, I still think the employees need talking too, if the line is to the door, don't take your sweet time and mess around.

Honestly I wish I could give no stars. Now before I continue let me say that I actually like Cafe Rio. Their food is good, portions are big enough to share and it's a little more than I would like to pay... But it's not that bad. Now to the reason why I only gave one star. Worst location I have ever ever been too!!! I don't know if it's just lack of training but it was ridiculous tonight. The kid at the first of the line was so lost, kept grabbing the wrong thing and was sooooo slow. Everyone that works there was walking around like zombies. No one was friendly they all looked like they hated their job and rather be anywhere then there. My Quesadilla had seriously like five pieces of chicken on it and it's not cheap to add the chicken. There was more cheese than tortilla and they barely cut it so it was super greasy and messy. Let's just say I was more than highly unimpressed. I don't care how far I have to drive I will not go here again!!!

When I think about all the Café Rio locations I've visited over the last 10+ years, I can definitely say I have had very varying experiences with these places. However, it's hard to deny that food wise, with the exception of one certain other similar chain, they are hard to beat and it's always enjoyable. For the most part I've found their food to be consistent regardless of location or how busy they are and for me the Pork Barbacoa Burrito is hard to beat. What frustrates me most with Café Rio is the degradation in customer service over the years, and the loss of the fun element in ordering in store. That was what made visiting these places great when they first started popping up. This one definitely is one of the worst when it comes to service, whether you dine in or get pick up it's rude and when it comes to the latter very inconsistent in the pickup times. In fact there's one experience I won't even share here - at the end of the day it was one bad employee who I'm sure didn't last long. But whoever "manages" this store really does need to train the staff and get some more experienced people who understand how to deal with customers or at the very least be friendly. For the most part I'll give Café Rio four stars for the food alone, but this one I'm dropping for 3 in the hopes they'll improve the service. They have so much competition when it comes to this type of food now, and certainly for me there's another chain I generally prefer since they know how to deal with customers and understand what's different in this particular market place now - people have choices!

This is the worst cafe rio you could ever go to. It used to be great but then they decided to hire teenagers who don't know what they are doing and have no work ethic whatsoever. My wife and I have ordered out from there a few times with absolutely terrible experiences each time. Our tacos had about two pieces of steak and our rice and beans were left out completely. On our next visit we had to wait ten minutes to be helped when there were at least 5 people standing around. In addition to that after we paid for our order we proceeded to wait another 5-10 minutes before we got our food only to find out that it was done before we even paid. It was an absolute joke! Spend ten more minutes to drive into the draper location where they actually have decent service.

  • Sam B.

Standard good cafe rio food, EXCEPT they NEVER EVER get your order right unless you babysit them, and they take forever and ever and ever, to get your order wrong.

    (2)
  • Scott B.

The line is always long and the service is always slow. Make sure to watch them make your order. We usually have to correct them a few times during the process. Once you get your food, it's usually pretty good.

  • Kevin Y.

We came here for an early dinner (around 5pm on a Wednesday) to find almost no wait line. I ordered the Sweet Pork Barbacoa Salad (part of the Wednesday Tostada Special) which was made assembly-line style in front of us as we picked what specific set of ingredients we wanted. The portions were quite big for a salad, the taste was in line with what I excepted, delicious, and kept me full for the rest of the day. I didn't have any problems with service like many others seemed to have, but who knows, maybe some time down the line, that will be different. Not sure why I incorporated the word "line" in all the sentences.

  • Brad S.

Consistency in service is what is lacking at this location. The food that we ordered was the same food we would get a other locations so on that note it's a plus. However, the process at the front line of taking and making orders was extremely frustrating and frustratingly long. Other places seem to whip things through like they know exactly how to make it and to get you your food as quickly as possible (except the take out line at the American Fork store but that's another story). At this location it's like they are missing 2-3 people or have taken slow motion pills when they got to work. Overall, great place but the execution and service consistency, when you have visited other Rio's, is lacking at this location.

Let me start with saying I love Cafe Rio - I just HATE this location. This is the closest location to our office so we frequently make lunch runs here or schedule orders for pick-up when we are working on late night projects. It is very rare that something is not wrong. From botched orders to burnt food from waiting on hold for 5+ minutes just to place an order - this location is a constant disappointment. If it's not terribly farther for you, I would really recommend the extra travel time to Fort Union or Draper.

    (1)
  • Jeni T.

I travel farther from work to come to this location. My only complaint is that people come during their lunch hour and waste half of it waiting. Please open more than one register when there is larger to go line. The whole reason people order before picking up is to not waste their time. Sorry but people's time is precious!!!

    (1)
  • K W.

Decent food, most of the time, but ordering on the phone is a struggle. The noise level is terrible and the waits and interruptions are unacceptable. The noise level is even worse dining in. You'll get s headache. And the wait is far too long, unless you show up at the slowest times.

I've been going to this location since the week it opened and have been a CF fan since their inception. The South Jordan location has gone down hill really fast this past year! Food quality is getting worse and that's the biggest issue. I have no problem waiting 30 minutes for great food but I can't do it for mediocre food. We usually do chicken burritos, salmon tacos and quesadillas but all are no longer good enough to warrant paying anything for them. My suspicion is this is a result of Corporate changes in food quality and they're buying cheaper product to satisfy shareholder value. I'm very disappointed.

  • Victoria V.

I'm new to Utah and everyone kept telling me to try this place and to get the sweet pork burrito or salad. I got the salad and boy was I satisfied, just as promised. It was very good. I'm from California so I've tried lots of Mexican food places. While this may be considered fast food, the quality is still there. Very tasty pork. There was a huge line when we walked in but it got down pretty quickly. Big line to me just meant it had to be good food right?...Right!

  • Kevin W.

I love Café Rio. I've never had a bad experience at this location either. Anyhow, the first time I went to Café Rio I ordered an enchilada and hated it. But then I was with some friends who insisted that we had Café Rio. So I went and I used order steak burritos all the time. I love them. But then my friends that introduced me to the salmon tacos. I am in love with the fresh salmon tacos and I've even had a good experience with the café Rio at this location. The beans and rice are phenomenal.

  • Katie B.

I love cafe rio! Hate this location. We have had a bad experience every time we have been. Waiting at the takeout counter for 10 minutes before someone helped us, while our food sat cold, as a worker just sat in the back wiping a counter is unacceptable, customers should come first. That has happened more than once at this location. We keep going back hoping it was just one bad night, but every time have a similar experience. Tried calling takeout and waited for five minutes with no one answering, before I gave up and hung up. Another time we went in and got tacos with barely any meat. Worst customer service of any cafe rio I have ever been to.

  • Suzette H.

They need to figure out a better system for their take out service. The line moved slower than the made to order line. My food was slotted to be ready for pick up at 6:15 and I arrived at 6:10 to see a take out line 20 people deep. There were bags and bags of food ready why not call out names. I saw the time stamp on mine which was done at 6:10 and stood in line until 6:40. Food was cold. Chicken not eatable (like jerky). This location has gone down hill. Who's watching/managing the store??

  • Joshua R.

Average for Cafe Rio and this style restaurant. Very busy so you'll definitely feel like a cow in line and while ordering. Mooovalong. Tried the tres leches for the first time. It was surprisingly not bad, I didn't say good just not bad. All round though it is good food and a good ambiance.

    (3)
  • Rebecca S.

The worst customer service I have ever received. I understand that they are always busy so they don't have to be nice, but surely with this crappy of customer service they will lose their customers. I won't be returning. I called in for a to go order to avoid the line and save time and the girl on the phone said "oh the line is only 10 minutes long just come in and wait in line we are not taking to go orders because they are only using the one food line" I said "no, I would like the food to be ready when I arrive that is why I am calling ahead, and suggested she have the main line make my food". She reluctantly agreed then after taking my order told me it wouldn't be ready for at least a half an hour. I said "I thought you said less than 10 minutes?". "Half an hour is the wait time on to go orders" she said. Seriously? Too bad because the food is yummy.

I'm a huge fan of Cafe Rio - but this location has miserable customer service! Literally my hand was on the door handle to walk in and order a meal to go. One of the employees refused to make eye contact - but flipped the lock and locked the door as my wife and I were trying to walk in. There were still people in line and dining in the restaurant. I will never support that location again!!! I will though tell people how horrible it was to be treated so poorly - and yes all the other comments about this locations poor service I have also experienced. Go to a diff location or find a diff place to eat!

If I could put 0 stars I would. I absolutely hate this cafe rio only because of their staff. HORRIBLE customer service. I get the worst looks ever everytime I come here. I only come back because it tastes so damn good. I hope they fire the rude girls that you purchase your food with. Also they get my order wrong quite often which is annoying. Also about ordering takeout, which I love to do rather than wait in a long line. Seems like they put a rediculous long time on ordering for pick up. They won't have your order for you any earlier than the time given, even if your are 15 min early and there are 0 people in line.

  • Matthew F.

I don't know why I keep trying this place. Cafe Rio is not bad, not great, but it is ok. This location however is horrible. Terrible service, very inconsistent on the portions. Avoid this location. Do yourself a favor, skip this location. There are several better food places around that don't have the wait and have much better service and better food. Try DP Philly, China Wok or even one of the burger places is better.

  • Doug H.

Horrible location. I have been to all of the Cafe Rio's and this one is certianly the worst. The Line cooks always swear in spanish when they see gringos in the line. They fail to realize that many "Gringos" can speak spanish. Needless to say, the manager did not care when I pointed this out to her.

  • Quinn L.

Our office has ordered online for lunch several times, and it never fails, they always screw up the order. And yes, we look in the bag, and always ask them, "is the order correct"? They always say yes and when we get back to the office, there is always food missing or the wrong item. And when you call them, the person is always so condecending. They act like we are the ones who screwed up, How hard is it to read the ticket and make the food that is on the ticket!! Seriously people!!!

    (2)
  • Jessica M.

This location is the worst! The staff was not at all apologetic to make me wait for 10 minutes after I paid for my food! They did not tell me how long I would have to wait and I've never had to sit down without my food at Cafe Rio... meanwhile my family's food got cold while we waited. When my tacos arrived they had made a mistake with my order, and did not apologize when I brought it up. I basically had to assemble the tacos myself because all of the fillings were on the edge of the tortilla and to top it off, the shrimp was a bit overcooked. I wrote an email to them through their website, but no response yet. I sure hope they write me to apologize. Customer service is very poor and I will not be going back.

I wish I could give this place negative stars. It is absolutely disgusting. This restaurant embodies everything that is wrong with American eating. Service is total crap and there is no flavor. If you want a good Mexican place in Utah go to Lone Star Taqueria. It's a million tines better. In fact I'd rather suffer through a night of stomach cramps by eating at Panda Express eight next door than eat this crap.

Jean W has to be an owner. after going to Cafe Rio today I had to come on and check the reviews.every review said the same thing. Totally crappy service.trying to explain to these girls what you want is like trying to teach algebra to a monkey. The girl had a completely stupid look on your face and they give you the impression that you did there too incompetent or they don't care.we have yet to come to this place and and receive what we ordered correctly. giving this store 1 star is giving them far too much credit.

Cafe Rio at large delivers quality food, but I agree this location needs a little help with their customer service/order accuracy. It seems in days past they used to go through line by line and read it back to you, include forks/knives, now, they just hand you a bag. We frequent this one as Draper has the worst parking in the valley.

  • Emily A.

Poor customer service. Their take out line is awful. Why order ahead if you are going to have to wait 20 minutes for your order, only to get home and find out its completely messed up, and have to drive back. Double check your order before leaving! Not our first bad experience there.

Closest location to me so its convenient, but food needs to be managed better. Rice is usually cold and hard. Couple of the line ladies have attitudes, so dont htink its your imagination.

This is one of our favorite repeat stops when mama doesn't feel like cooking. First, and I believe most importantly, the food is consistenly delectable. Everything we've tried, even the specials that don't achieve permanent menu status, has been inarguably delicious. But it's the top-notch service that Cafe Rio really knows how to do properly. Whomever is training the staff at each location should be commended. They have this down to a science. If you're eating in, you walk through the line and, similar to a sandwich shop, you pick your own ingredients. Then you pay and pick up your food at the end of the line. Favorite menu items include the Sweet Pork Barbacoa Salad/Burrito, the Chile Roasted Beef Tacos, the Coconut Shrimp (yowsa!), the guacamole (wow!), and the salsa fresca! If you're a Chile Relleno fan, try them when they're on special!!! For take-out orders, when you call they clearly confirm your order, provide you with an *exact* pickup time, and give you your order total so you can be fully prepared. All you do is show up, get in the separate take-out line, pay, grab your bag of food, and you're outta there. Service is with a smile, and if you happen to be lucky enough to have your reward card all filled, the entire staff *celebrates* your free meal with an announcement and eruption of joy. I've had to wait for take-out food on one occasion, a Friday night, and it was beyond packed. They provided free drinks for everyone who was made to wait for their orders, even though it was only 3 minutes of waiting. Other than that, my food has been ready exactly when they tell me it will be, and to date no location we've been to have ever made an order mistake. It's perfect, every time. My only warning is that every Cafe Rio location is always busy and their acoustics render the place very loud. If you're looking for a quiet atmosphere in which you can carry on a conversation, get the food to go and find a park!

I've been to other Cafe Rios in Colorado and other parts of Utah. This was not the Cafe Rio that other places represent. The service was EXTREMELY slow and there must have been 50 people in line with one employee SLOWLY serving one customer at a time. In Denver during rush hour or busy times, they would have 2 or 3 employees taking and filling orders at once. I seriously won't go back except for a very quiet afternoon. Don't hit this place on the weekend. It's not even worth it and thats saying a lot for the amazing good food.

Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
